About alliegatormu

Hey I'm Allison or otherwise known as Alligator. I am currently a senior (yay grad school!) at MU studying speech-language pathology. I love MU because it reminds me of my high school; it's a tight-knit community where people hold doors for you no matter how far away you are. My favorite time on campus is in the fall, it is absolutely gorgeous. When I'm not studying I'm either reading or watching Netflix (yes I am a junkie). I also really love food, so cooking and baking are fun too!

Packing Playlist

August. Some people think “finally”, while others think “oh no!”. Me? Well I’m in between those two thoughts. I’m really excited to be reunited with some of my favorite people but at the same time I am completely dreading the start of grad school. So I’m starting to prepare myself by slowly packing some things up and purchasing all of the requirements for a new school year. While going through the process I noticed a consistency: music. I would dread gathering stuff up, but once I started playing music I become more excited about the process. So then I thought to myself, why wouldn’t you make a playlist specifically for packing and moving (including the day of) that will keep you excited for the school year? So I did and I would like to share it with everyone because it made me look forward to another great year at Mis!

Advice for First Years

School starts back up in a little over one month. For the first year students starting at MU it’s 4 days less than that. These students get an extra four days at MU to prepare themselves for their next 4 (or 5 or 6) years there. This has me thinking about my first year and what I would tell myself within that first month of the new school, at a new place, with new people. Here’s 5 good pieces of advice I want you first years to know because I needed to know it myself.

1. Get along with your Roomate
This one was fortunately very easy for me because I was blessed with two wonderful and respectful roommates that I’m still friends with now. It can be hard to get along with someone 24/7 in that tiny of a space but as long as you respect them and their space they should do the same back. At the same time though don’t cling to just your roommate, go out and meet new people, make friends with people you normally wouldn’t. You’d be surprised at who you’ll end up making lasting relationships with.

2. Eating in the Dining Hall
Yes no more parents around to tell you to eat your vegetables!Just because your mom isn’t looking over your shoulder to make sure you took your appropriate amount of broccoli doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. You need to keep yourself healthy and that starts with eating right. The freshmen 15 can be a real thing!

3. Use the facilities/services
There’s a gym! At MU we are lucky enough not to have to pay a membership for the gym! That means you can go whenever and however often you want to! The same goes for the computers! Also our campus offers group physical classes like yoga, kickboxing or even clay making that don’t cost that much at all! Included in these “services” are things like peer-tutoring that would be foolish not to take advantage of!

4. Academics
I was not academically prepared for college at all, high school was a breeze (okay a joke) for me. Once I got to college I got a HUGE wake up call. There is this thing called studying that actually needs to be done. If your prof tells you to read the book guess what you need to read the book because Sparknotes can’t write the in-class essay for you! Please take this one piece of advice seriously and follow through with it. You are not putting all this time, money, and effort for four years (or 5 or 6) of socializing!

5. Be you
This is the time that most people discover who they, who they want to be, what they want to, who they want to meet and where they want to go in life. The most important thing to remember through the next four years (or 5 or 6) is to be you, whoever that may be, unapologetically.

S’more Fun

It’s summer time so that means it’s time for camping, campfires and everyone’s favorite, S’mores! I’m going camping this weekend, so it got me to thinking. I think most everyone’s immediate thought when they hear the word camping is s’mores. How could you not think of s’mores?! They’re a staple at every good fire or camping trip! Just thinking about their ooey-gooey warmness makes me crave one! So this has inspired me to find some of the best s’mores recipes, some of which don’t require a campfire! There’s some classic s’mores recipes with a kick or a whole new twist on s’mores!

Summer Adventures

Picture_13626_taken_on_2015-06-20_164034
I  just recently celebrated my birthday and I had quite the adventure when I did. I went to Camelback Mountain Adventures over the weekend. Everyone knows Camelback for their skiing or waterpark but their Mountain Adventures area is fairly new. I’m telling you all of this because all of their parks are so close to Mis and there is something to do for every season.

I went on their 4000′ zip line, which no big deal, is the tallest in North America! Even on a cloudy day it was still breathtakingly beautiful. You can reach speeds up to 60 mph, which did create a few tears to roll down my face. You take the ski lift up to the top of the mountain which gives you enough time to calm down your nerves, but as soon as you get to the platform where you take off, all of the nerves come rushing back! It’s all worth it though once you feel like a bird soaring over literally everything! You might be shaking after you get off, but I’m pretty sure that’s normal since you just flew for almost a mile!

After that rush I went to do their treetops adventure course. Because of a time constraint I did their half course, which allows you to do 3 out of the 5 courses. They harness you up and send you to a demo course where you get to practice each of the obstacles you’ll be facing. The best part of all of this is you do it all on your own. You attach and reattach yourself to the wires and hook up the zip line all by yourself. There are guides there that will help you when you need it (and warn you when you’re not doing something safely). There’s plenty of zip lines throughout it and they get longer and higher as you continue through the courses. There’s obstacles like moving bridges, nets, and Tarzan ropes that you have to conquer. You get such a strong sense of independence from doing all of this and it really makes you feel great! It was one of the best experiences/adventures I’ve ever had and I strongly recommend doing it to anyone!

Being Proud

Summer has finally arrived, which means for the most part everyone returned home for the next three months. I myself have returned home for possibly the last summer (I have grad school next summer and after graduation I’m sure I will be moved out of my parents house). So the subject of today is home. My home. I absolutely love it here in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. The reason I chose Misericordia is because it reflected the same environment I had grown up with. A small tight-knit school that has open areas and kind people. When most people talk about home they refer to the town they live in, I refer to the whole county, because it’s that small. The whole county attended one elementary school and one high school, a total of 300 some kids attended the high school alone. That’s why I chose Misericordia, because it was a small school and that’s what I wanted.

There was a trend recently that involved  #misericordiaproud, I really enjoyed seeing people’s posts about why they love MU and what made them choose MU.

It reminded me of why you should always be proud of who you are and where you come from. I’m extremely proud of being a student at MU but I’m also proud of coming from Sullivan County(SC). I think telling you why would be enough, but if you’re still not convinced then the pictures should say it all. The best part about this is it’s all within 2 hours of MU’s campus so you can visit any of these places during the school year!

The Places
Worlds End State Park
Shrouded by clouds, mountains march to the horizon in this photo of the Worlds End Vista at Worlds End State Park, Pennsylvania.
It’s a state park that spans over 750 acres of hiking, swimming, camping, fishing, and any other outdoor activity you can think of.

Ricketts Glen State Park
A hiking trail climbs near the waterfall Ozone at Ricketts Glen State Park, Pennsylvania.
Another state park that has over 20 waterfalls including a 94-foot one. They also have a lake that you can swim, kayak, and fish at.

High Knob Overlook

It has one of the most amazing views in the whole county, especially during the fall, with an elevation of almost 2,000 feet .

The Events
Dushore’s Founders Day
Dushore Founders Day and Outhouse Races
One of the most notable events the county has is the Dushore Founders Day. It has events throughout one day that include a toilet painting seat contest, a pet parade and an outhouse race. I know all of this sounds absurd but check out the youtube link of the outhouse races to get a better understanding as to why hundreds of people come from all over to watch the event once a year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FO2554wavno Fun fact: I’m the driver of the silver outhouse!

Winterfest

An event that takes place in february that involves people jumping into a frozen lake in order for a chance to receive a prize (yes we acknowledge that we do some crazy things in this county!). There’s also an ice fishing competition.

PA Bowhunter’s Festival

Once a year our county gets the honor of holding the bowhunter’s festival for the whole state (probably because we have a large quantity of hunters). It is the world’s largest archery event.

There is so much more to see and do in my favorite little place in the world, just visiting and seeing the sights is an experience within itself! I’m proud of where I came from and #misericordiaproud of where I am!

Graduation Inspiration

Finals are just around the river bend! So that means graduation will be shortly after! Although I’m not graduating this year I have a habit of constantly thinking about the day that I do (who doesn’t?!). When I think about my graduation day I think about who I’ll be giving those precious tickets to and what I’ll be wearing, but the one thing I always ponder (and pin) about is how I’ll decorate my graduation cap. While it is not a requirement by any means to decorate it, why wouldn’t you want to decorate it?! It’s a way to show how you’re feeling on this important day. You can be funny or philosophical or grateful, whatever you want to say or put on your cap is acceptable! In case you need some ideas here are some for every “type a way” you’ll be feeling that day!
