What You Should Know As An Adult

The fact that some of you will become a “real adult” within a few months, is a very scary thought, I would imagine. I’m not even 21 yet and I’m freaking out about the real world on a daily basis. There’s a lot of things as a “real adult” that you should know how to do or be aware of (or at least know who to hire to do it for you). So today I’m writing about the things you should know as an adult. Some of them you probably already know about because they’re basic things, while others you might not have even ever heard of!

Basic Cooking

As an adult you should know the basics in the kitchen (even if it’s just making scrambled eggs). You can’t order from Domino’s everyday for the rest of your life. So please look at this link to gather some basic kitchen skills so you can survive.

Change a Tire

This might have already happened to you where you were stranded because of a flat tire and needed to call AAA, so you should learn how to do it so next time you’re fully prepared and can look like part of the NASCAR pit crew.

How To Make A Budget

Right now you think you’re poor, but this isn’t anything compared to what it will be when you have dozens of bills to pay and you’re at a starting salary. You need to know how to manage your money and stick with a plan.

Whether you’re at a yard sale trying to get a lamp for $5 instead of $10 or you’re asking for a raise and it’s a difference of $5,000 having negotiating skills will really help you out in the long run.

Whether you want to learn to do them on your own or you can afford to hire someone to do them for you, you should really know the basics of taxes so you don’t lose any money or end up in trouble owing money.

This skill is actually required to know how to do in most medical professions. Think about how beneficial it would be to anyone that someone around them knew proper CPR in case anything unfortunate were to happen.

Create a Resume

If you don’t already know this one, learn it, because you really probably won’t get a job without having a resume or knowing how to create a proper one.

Hold a Conversation

In your life you are going to encounter a lot of people from different backgrounds, cultures, genders, and ages. It’s important that you know how to interact and talk with all sorts of different people, because you could learn a lot in the process and meet some really cool people.

How to Swim

Here’s another one that if you don’t already know how to do you really should. Even if it’s just doggy-paddling so you can stay afloat or knowing how to hold your breath underwater, knowing how to swim is a skill that you will use more often that you think.

Knowing your Credit Score

It’s good to be aware of your finances, but you should definitely be aware of your credit score too. Your credit score determines if you can get a loan or apply for a credit card, when you know your credit score you can also be aware of whether you’ve experienced identity theft.

How to Balance

At any stage in your life you have to juggle many different aspects at once. Right now you balance school, work, friends, family, and focusing on yourself. As an adult you’ll have all of that to balance plus bills and finances. When you have all of this balanced you can finally achieve peace in your life.

About alliegatormu

Hey I'm Allison or otherwise known as Alligator. I am currently a senior (yay grad school!) at MU studying speech-language pathology. I love MU because it reminds me of my high school; it's a tight-knit community where people hold doors for you no matter how far away you are. My favorite time on campus is in the fall, it is absolutely gorgeous. When I'm not studying I'm either reading or watching Netflix (yes I am a junkie). I also really love food, so cooking and baking are fun too!
