There seems to be a running joke about there being “absolutely nothing to do around here.” Well, I’m here to tell you that that statement is positively untrue. There are many really fun things to get into here in NEPA. There are many cool restaurants and small shops. There are record stores and outlet malls. There’s even clubs, casinos and an arena. In this post, however, I will be focusing on the good ol’ fashioned (mostly free) outdoor fun.

1. Dear Path Riding Stable

At this stable you can enjoy an hour long horse ride through a beautifully scenic path. During the ride, you will be able to acquire information on both the horses and the environment around you. These rides are available every day of the week and year round. You can enjoy this peaceful and educational experience for only $36.

2. Frances Slocum State Park

Here at the outstandingly beautiful Frances Slocum, you can enjoy many activities for free. You could go hiking, swimming, hunting, boating, fishing, camping and mountain biking. During the winter months, you can enjoy cross-country skiing, sledding, ice fishing and ice skating.

3. Hickory Run State Park

Hickory Run has acquired a certificate of excellence, so you should definitely check this park out. Here you can enjoy hiking, disc golfing, orienteering, geocaching, and camping. There are many cottages and deluxe cottages available for when you decide to stay overnight on a camping trip. There are many activities available during the winter months here as well, such as cross-country skiing, riding snow mobiles and ice skating.

4. Ricketts Glen State Park

Ricketts Glen is truly a gorgeous place to visit. With over 25 miles of trails to choose from, it makes maneuvering around their 13,050 acres a never ending experience for years. Besides hiking you may also go swimming, picnicking, boating, fishing, hunting, horseback riding and camping. There is also cross-country skiing, snow mobiling and ice fishing available in the winter.

So when you are here at school and find yourself with nothing to do, remember that as long as there is an outdoors to be explored, you should never be bored. 🙂
